What I think you should know: 

Texas Holiday Hideout by Virginia Vaughn is Christian Romantic Suspense. It is the second book in the Lawman Cowboy series. The first book does not have to be read prior to this book, but it does give updates on some of the characters in the first book. The book is set around Christmas, but it can be ready anytime of year. 

What I think about this book:

What a ride, mystery and danger with a backdrop of Christmas! I enjoyed this book so much, it was full of action and suspense with enough connection to the characters to pull at your heart.  Melissa was in such a hard situation, but I admired how she was willing to do anything to keep her son safe. Miles was a wonderful character, I enjoyed the interaction between Miles and Melissa.  Vaughn did a great job of keeping me guessing about what was going to happen next. I will be recommending this to all of my friends. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.

What if one day you discovered you were in the Witness Protection Program and didn’t know it?

This is the premise for my October book, TEXAS HOLIDAY HIDEOUT, which releases this month. My heroine, Melissa Morgan, learns she and her mother entered the program when Melissa was a child. Her mother never told her and, when Melissa witnesses her mother being murdered, she becomes the assassin’s next target. US Marshal Miles Avery steps in to protect the single mom and her son from a killer, but a leak in WITSEC leaves him with little options except to take his witnesses to his family’s ranch…and pretend she’s his wife for the holidays.

So, in celebration of TEXAS HOLIDAY HIDEOUT releasing this month, here are 10 things about the Witness Protection Security Program (or WITSEC) I learned during my research for this book.

1. 1. The program is voluntary. No one can be forced to enter.
   2. You can leave the program at any time—although it is not recommended.
   3. No person in the program, who follows the rules, has ever been killed.
   4. People entering WITSEC sometimes keep their same first name and/or initials so that if they mess up and start to sign their name, they have time to correct.
   5. Since WITSEC is a federal program, many states have their own programs to protect witnesses of gang or street-level crimes.
   6. If you get married while in WITSEC, you must lie to your new spouse to protect your true identity in the event the relationship doesn’t last.
   7. Protected witnesses are mostly criminals. Only about 5% are innocents despite the popular trope in movies and fiction.
   8. Local law enforcement may or may not be notified when a protected witness is relocated to their jurisdiction.
   9. Divorced, non-custodial parents have had their children hidden from them and now must agree to allow their children to enter the program.
   10. WITSEC protected witnesses are expected to eventually become self-sufficient. They do not get to live off the government for the rest of their lives.

What I think you should know:

Pretending to Wed is Christian Historical Fiction by Melissa Jagears. The book is set in the Wyoming Territory in 1884. It is the second book in the Frontier Vows series. While it does feature characters from the prior book it is able to be read as a stand alone. It features Corinne who is struggling with crippling pain and Nolan a rancher who lost his leg shortly after coming west.


What you might need to know:

Corinne had premarital sex in a prior relationship. Her self worth is impacted by her decision and while it is mentioned in the book it is not shown without consequences.


What I think about this book:

I love to read books that feature strong and creative women, Corinne definitely fits this. She is an inventor who is looking to make her life and job easier. She was a very interesting character who I was not able to always predict. Nolan broke my heart, I wish that he would have realized that even with a prosthetic leg that he was still worthy of love. Matt was a perfect villain and I enjoyed the plot. I really enjoy how the story came together and hope to see more of the characters in the next book in the series.

The Elusive Electrical Spark to Awaken Frankenstein’s Monster

The plot of Pretending to Wed just wasn’t coming together for me. I had the romantic dilemma, but I didn’t love the characters. They were boring. And if I’m going to write a book, a.k.a. read it a bazillion times, I have to really want to read the book myself. I decided to take a break from the weeks of struggle and read. I was recommended a book because of the author’s great voice (I can’t recommend it because it’s not a clean novel), but I loved the fact that the heroine was a scientific illustrator. I wondered if I could give my heroine a scientific hobby and came up with inventing. That single character tidbit was the jolt that awakened Frankenstein’s Monster. She came alive! The research into what she could have patented at the time led my imagination to the egg hatching romance scene in the middle of the story and I was hooked! I couldn’t wait to read my book that didn’t yet exist.

What I think you should know about this book:

Different Like Me Written by Xochitl Dixon and Illustrated by Bonnie Lui is a Children’s Picture book. It has bright and bold illustrations that are attractive and fun for teachers.

What I think about this book:

This is such a delightful book ! Even before the current social climate I tried to find books that showed diversity. This book has diversity in spades. It features boys and girls, it has multiple skin tones, body types and excitedly for me Children with disabilities! It features a child with a wheelchair, another with a cane and dark glasses and a service dog. Most importantly it shows the children active and engaged in activities. I love that even with their different abilities each child is having fun and shown with friends. The only thing that I would change about the book would have been to have a child with a hearing aid, I just know from personal experience that it is hard to find a child with a hearing aid in books unless it is a book specifically about hearing loss. ( If I got a print copy I would happily draw one on a character for my son!) I also like the repetitive question in the book as it would make for a fun read aloud with a student. I highly recommend this book to any parent, preschool or Sunday School teacher!

Why I Wrote Different Like Me

What are you?

That question used to trigger anger, frustration, and sadness, especially when people responded in disbelief because my answer didn’t fit the stereotypes they’d accepted as truth. My insecurities deepened, causing me to hate my own light-but-not-white reflection. Years later, when I became a mom of two black sons, I didn’t want them to suffer similar insecurities. I didn’t want them to think their worth as people could be determined by the opinions, expectations, or biases of others. I wanted my sons to love God, to love the way God created them, and to love all the people God created. But my desires and best-intentions couldn’t protect them the ignorance and hate so prevalent in our fallen world.

One day, during a trip to an ice cream shop, an adult male glared at my five-year-old son and said, “What are you?” The sting of his words ripped the scar off the wound on my heart that I thought had healed.

Asking God to help me forgive, I sought ways to help my sons rejoice in their uniqueness and God’s creativity in designing all of His people. While studying my Bible, I began learning how to embrace my identity in Christ. The more I learned about God’s love for me, the more I began to accept I worth loving and the more I began to love others.

I wrote Different Like Me in 2001, shortly after receiving Jesus as my Lord and Savior. Originally, I had planned to use the poem to teach my sons how to celebrate our differences and our sameness as God’s beautifully diverse and purposefully connected people. But the Lord kept nudging me to share the story with others.

In 2016, my agent and an editor read Different Like Me, loved it, but couldn’t move forward with publication. The following year, I signed a contract for my first full-length devotional, Waiting for God: Trusting Daily in God’s Plan and Pace. I set Different Like Me aside as I worked on the other projects the Lord had entrusted to me.

In 2018, shortly after submitting Waiting for God to my editor at Our Daily Bread Publishing, my agent and the editor who had loved Different Like Me in 2016 surprised me with two contract offers.

I scrambled to prepare my first children’s picture book proposal with the help of my friend and prolific children’s book author, Crystal Bowman. I submitted the proposal to several editors before prayerfully deciding to accept a contract from Our Daily Bread Publishing.

Then, I began praying for an illustrator who would avoid stereotypes and include children with special needs as heroes, not sideline characters. Bonnie Lui did a fabulous job. She weaved her own beautiful story into the gorgeous illustrations that breathe life into the whimsical rhyming text I’d written almost two decades earlier. Bonnie even created a character inspired by my service dog, Callie, a Border Collie/Hound mix we’d rescued in 2018 from a kill-shelter after God moved us from California to Wisconsin.

Earlier this year, as I prepared for the August 2020 release of Different Like Me, tragedy divided our world. I truly believe God delayed my path to publication so that He could prepare hearts to receive the message of love, unity, peace, and hope that He has brought to life through each page of Different Like Me.

What I think you should know:

To Love a Prince by Rachel Hauck is the first book in the True Blue Royal series.  Although this book is the first in a series it follows up with a few of the characters from Hauck’s book , The Fifth Avenue Story Society.  You can read this book first, but you will understand a little more about the background of Prince Augustus if you have read the prior book first.

What I think about this book:

Hauck has a wonderful way of bringing her characters to life in a way that they could easily be one of your friends. Daffy was such a wonderful character, I felt so bad for her in many of the situations in the book and was pulling for her.  I loved Coral in The Fifth Avenue Story Society so I was super excited to get to read her ex fiance’s story!  Prince Augustus was not what I had expected him to be from Coral’s story. It was interesting to get to know him.  I love how the story showed that choices that you make in the past can come back to haunt you. The story kept me turning the pages and I did not want it to end. I look forward to the next book in the series.

Hello Royal Rockstar Readers!

I'm thrilled to share To Love A Prince with you. So many of you who loved the Royal Wedding Series have asked for more royals so as I noodled over new story ideas, my thoughts drifted toward princes and princesses. What's more romantic than a royal wedding?

This royal story, the first book in a new series, True Blue Royal, is set in a new fictional country, Lauchtenland, in the North Sea. I’m really squeezing all those oil wells currently occupying that body of water.

The beauty of royal stories is they remind us of who we really are: princes and princesses. There is always a point in the story where the royal character, as well as the commoner, must come to grips with his and her true identity! Who God says we are!

Stories are a powerful reflection of life and it’s fun to insert ourselves into the tale. While fiction employs a lot of hyperbole we can find ourselves on the page somewhere, somehow.

Mystery, suspense and romance readers will enjoy this story.  Well developed characters make this book an enjoyable read.  The historical aspects added to the story.  Add mystery and romance and you have a good story. The inspirational story contained in the pages makes this worth the read.

The River Beautiful is my first novel. The story means so much to me, and I am so happy to finally share it with you all. This book has been years in the making and covers so many topics that are important to me. Many of them were fun to write about, but a few were hard to deal with at times. Three elements stand out to me when I think of Lena’s story: Love, Loss, and Legend. Love- Love is a beautiful gift. In fact, I would say it is the most precious gift God ever gave us. Love, in its correct form, is free, unconditional, and the basis our salvation. God’s love for us cannot be altered or blocked by darkness, not even the paralyzing darkness of grief. So, when love comes into play in this story, it comes from that perspective. Lena struggles to accept love, but I think that is a place many of us have been at one time or another. Loss can be lifechanging and usually not for the better. To turn The River Beautiful into the story it is, I had to bring up emotions from my own experiences with grief. Churning up those feelings after I’d had them tucked away for so long resulted in many tearful typing sessions. But at the end of the day, I think it brought unexpected healing and a level of authenticity to the story that it would not have had otherwise. Legend- Researching the legends of the Lenni Lenape people was enlightening. I have always felt a connection to history and the past intrigues me so that I could not help but bring in some element of mystery from the area’s indigenous inhabitants. My usual go-to when it comes to history tends to be Early American and European, but for this project I was able to bring in a blend of all three for a fictional retelling of key events—and that was exciting! By combining the elements of Love, Loss, and Legend, I hope I have created a story that not only entertains but moves readers as well. And I hope you love it!

About the Author

Paula A. Price is quickly becoming the international voice on the subject of apostolic and prophetic ministry. She has founded and established three churches, an apostolic and prophetic Bible institute, a publication company, a consulting firm, and a global collaborative network linking apostles and prophets together for the purpose of kingdom vision and ventures. Although she has written over twenty-five books, manuals, and other course material on the apostolic and prophetic, she is most recognized for her unique 1,600-term The Prophet’s Dictionary, a concise prophetic training manual entitled Church Prophets, and her follow-up, The Prophet’s Handbook, a tool for establishing prophetic ministry in the church. Paula is host of her own program, Let’s Just Talk: Where God Makes Sense. She has a D.Min. and a Ph.D. in Religious Education from Word of Truth Seminary in Alabama.
